Poverty and Social Assistance in Transition Countries by Jeanine Braithwaite,
Declining incomes and growing income inequality have led to a rise in poverty in the transition economies of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. This study examines poverty and social assistance in six countries--Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Estonia, Russia, and Kyrgyz Republic--to compare the poverty profiles and the correlates of poverty between the two regions. The study finds that the profile of poverty is more sharply defined in Eastern Europe than in the former Soviet Union, where poverty is more widespread. This holds the potential for better targeting of social assistance in Eastern Europe, and the study proposes a novel two-step approach to identify the poor.

Government experiences in Cambodia and the Republic of Korea garner particular attention, as does the role of trade unions in an increasingly global labor market. Also included are discussions on the viability of community-wide health insurance schemes in poor nations and disaster risk management plans designed to protect the poor.

Poverty in the United States - There is significant disagreement about poverty in the United States; particularly over how poverty ought to be defined. Using radically different definitions, two major groups of advocates have claimed variously (a) that the United States has eliminated poverty over the last century; or (b) that it has such a severe crisis of poverty that it ought to devote significantly more resources to the problem.

Poverty reduction - Poverty reduction or poverty alleviation is the weak form of poverty eradication. Two types of poverty are recognised - income poverty and non income poverty.

Culture of poverty - The culture of poverty concept is a social theory explaining the cycle of poverty. Based on the concept that the poor have a unique value system, the culture of poverty theory suggests the poor remain in poverty because of their adaptations to the burdens of poverty.

Cycle of poverty - In economics and sociology, the cycle of poverty, or poverty cycle is a social phenomena whereby poverty-stricken individuals exhibit a tendency to remain poor throughout their lifespan and in many cases across generations.
